My devotional this AM is from 2Timothy 2, but when I turned the page, a highlighted portion from a previous reading jumped out at me:
"...For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But YOU(caps mine) keep your head in all situations..." 2Timothy 4:3-5A
This passage describes perfectly (at least to me) the situations I have heard recently; whether at work or on the TV news. I battle with a lot of gossip in my day to day work and it's so easy to fall into that opinion trap.
What are my ears itching to hear? "Well done, thy good and faithful servant" - not alot of "he said...., she said.....". Second Timothy is a great place to get that encouragement; I have some of this scripture written on notes in my work station. Starting at verse 14, "Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarelling about words; it is of no value,....Do your best to present yourself as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed.......Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly." And later in this chapter in verse 23 "Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments because you know they produce quarrels." How much more ammuniton do I need against the enemy? Think on THESE things as you go along your work day. I know I will.
