Jesus in the Coffee Cup

I did an eight hour road trip today. Along about the sixth hour, I started the yawning, eyes tearing sequence. Throw in the warm sun and I knew I’d better do something about it. I wanted to be closer to my destination before finding a motel. 2004-02-18 14.17.45

Thankfully, coffee shops abound nowadays. And, needing gas anyway, I pulled in to the Go Mart (gas was $3.15/gallon for regular!) I paid for my gas at the pump, grabbed my pink coffee mug, and headed inside.

A note about my pink mug. It holds a special spot in my heart. It belonged to my mother, who went to be with Jesus in 1998. The mug is actually an insulated Thermos brand coffee type mug. It was what they gave the patients for water at their bedsides. I think this is a great idea–something you can actually use, instead of those flimsy little pitchers. But I digress…

I went into the Go Mart, and proceeded to make my coffee. They had at least three different sizes; I estimated the mug holds 16 oz, but I thought the 20 ounce cup looked like the size of the diameter of the mug.

At the register, I told the lady I wasn’t sure how much the cup holds; she should probably charge me the 20 ounce price. She looked at me for a second, speechless, and proceeded to charge me 88 cents.

Imagine my surprise.

I started to correct her about the price and she told me, because I didn’t come up to the counter and demand to be charged the lowest possible price, she decided to charge me only the refill price.

My mind immediately went to a verse in Phillipians. Verse 5 says “Let your gentleness be evident to all…” (NIV)

And she smiled so sweetly. I can only imagine her earlier customers’ attitudes.

Such a sweet aroma of Jesus in my coffee cup!

  1. I stopped by here today to catch up and see what’s been happening since the Writer’s Conference… and what a great story! I agree, one can only imagine what that clerk had to deal with prior to your visit – it sounds like you made her day!

Even in the ordinary things like getting a cup of coffee, Jesus gets to shine in your life – and that’s the greatest story ever, really 🙂

Thanks Susan! It indeed was a great conference for me…I have much to do! I’m not bouncing back as quickly as I’d like so I’m slow in posting, but I am moving forward! Appreciate your checking in with me!
      Blessings to you my friend!

Lovely story Cyn. I love how God works amidst what others would call small. It was by the worlds standards, but made powerful through the love of Christ. Shine on sis!

Looking forward to seeing you at Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference!

  5. That’s such a sweet story. Those kinds of stories are the best, when you encounter God in a small moment.
